It is said that during this period Parvati handed over Murugan a Vel (spear) to defeat Soorapadman, a ferocious demon. Among the two schools of thought, one believes that Thaipusam is celebrated as Murugan’s birthday, while the other is of the view that Murugan’s birthday falls in month of Vaikhasi (May/June).
