Chopin’s ‘Fantasie Impromptu’ is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever gotten the chance to perform. I had first heard the piece on t.v., and instantly knew I wanted to learn it. When I told my piano teacher, I could tell she was a bit surprised because I was just a kid at the time, but she was so enthusiastic to teach it to me. It took a couple of months, and I was finally able to perform the piece in 7th grade at a concert at school, and also for a piano festival. I’m so grateful that she challenged and motivated me to keep going, even when I thought I couldn’t. I’m also so thankful to my music teacher at school, who wanted me to perform a solo at the concert. When I performed it in front of my school, I was so nervous beforehand that I was close to hyperventilating- but when I got on stage and started playing, I just entered my own musical world, and nothing else mattered. The nerves were gone and it was just me and the music. It was then when I truly realized that I want to share music with others and should not be afraid of messing up, or let nerves get the best of me.
After recently finding a video from the piano festival 12 years ago, I decided to revisit this piece and perform it for you guys. It really reinforced the notion that you can always grow and improve in your craft; you can always add on a new level of emotion and maturity to something once learned. I hope I can play it better 12 years from now. Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoy playing it. Much love.
